A Guide to ISP Providers, Broadband news in India

Internet service providers, better known as ISPs, are the new angels of a virtual world. After all, most of the commerce and almost all the communication needs of the modern world are dependent on the Internet, and one cannot have access to the internet without having an ISP around to provide us the relevant service.

For a consumer, that is, any Internet user, choosing the right ISP is a major decision. After all, your career, socializing and entertainment needs are centered about the quality of this service.

Some people choose an ISP that allows for easy usage and convenient set-up. Some people prefer to choose an ISP that gives them more professional services, since their usage is for professional purposes. Others want an ISP that gives them maximum security.

The majority of ISPs now will give their consumers a vast range of packages and options to choose from, depending on their technology, the needs and the paying ability of the consumer. They also offer value-added services like email addresses and web space. If you choose wisely, you can even put up your own website on the web space offered by the ISP, on a remote server hosted by them.

According to last year's statistics, nearly 600 licenses were issued by DoT, and approximately 380 towns were covered through the network of ISPs. India had already crossed the 4.1 million mark, where internet connections were concerned, which speaks volumes for the growth of ISPs. It is true that the majority of net users are male and young, but it is also important to note that the bigger players have extended services in at least fifty cities or more, and it is likely that they will soon step into rural areas, and offer satellite services for remote regions.

Also, well aware that India could lose billions of dollars worth of exports, if it did not upscale its broadband infrastructure needs, the government-owned infrastructure builders have begun to criss-cross the nation with fibre-optic cables.
